I am planning to visit my country when the dust settles later this year (fingers crossed!). When it comes to flight ticket, it’s already covered! Do you want to know how? Let’s start looking into travel hacking in Canada or credit card churning.
What Is Travel Hacking in Canada?
Travel hacking by definition is the art of collecting frequent flyer points and miles to get free flights, hotels, and more.
Unlike the US market, Travel hacking in Canada seems challenging since we have fewer credit card options; however, there are still some great credit cards that you can get the most out of it.
The best way to collect frequent flyer points is that you need to sign-up a new card strategically and aiming for sign-up bonuses rather than using one single card for a longer-term.
I started travel hacking in 2018, and ever since, I was able to get a free flight ticket to Toronto for 2 people and enough points to cover my flight to Korea.
Best Approach For Beginner
The first thing you need to do is to sign up for flight or hotel programs that you are going to be using most.
For Canadians, Aeroplan is the most well-liked and known flight program. It is owned by Air Canada, Canada’s flag carrier. They provide air transport for passengers to 207 destinations worldwide.
If you travel to Europe a lot, it might be a better idea to choose the frequent flyer program offered by British Airways.
Also, If you are planning to stay at a hotel, sign up for hotel rewards too such as Marriott Bonvoy or Starwood Preferred Guest.
Credit Card Recommendation
You already signed-up flight or hotel programs. Now what?
Here’s the most fun part of Travel Hacking: sign up credit cards and collect points! I have been opening up and closing a number of credit cards and collecting points without having any credit score issues. Actually, my credit score has been increased since I started credit card churning.
In terms of credit cards recommendation, I prefer American Express CobaltTM Card and American Express® Gold Rewards Card; however, what works for me may not works for you. Also, there are a lot of great credit cards out there and their rewards tend to be changed all the time.
This is why I would recommend the Reddit page which summarizes all the credit cards with sign-up bonuses. They are also keeping it up-to-date which is the most important thing for credit cards.
Best Way to Reach Minimum Spending
When it comes to sign-up bonuses that I have kept talking about here, It all comes down to minimum spending. It’s a minimum amount of money we must spend to be eligible for the sign-up bonuses. Usually, you are required to charge a minimum spending requirement to your credit card within three months.
Minimum spending requirement varies from $1,500 to $7,000. If you spend more than $5,000 a month, it would be a piece of cake, but It is impossible to spend $7,000 for 3 months for most of us.
There are various ways to reach minimum spending. The most easiest and effective way is to buy gift cards to prepay your future expenses.
For example, if you normally spend $500 a month on groceries, and you’re planning to reach a $1,500 spend within three months, you could go to grocery stores to buy up three months’ worth of gift cards.
